Hello
Possums!
The
drought officially ended last year with spring storms that blew
apart the eagles’ nest. We had a very wet year with the rains
providing the nourishment to grow amazing habitat. We are
pleased to report that the eagles are working feverishly on
their nest and it looks like we will be sending out hatch
announcements in the future.
Our education program
“Monarch Madness-Stewardship Beyond Borders” was a huge
success! The morning before the program, we awoke to find
millions of monarch butterflies roosting in the trees. As the
temperature warmed, they took to the air and great clouds of the
butterflies streamed overhead. The students arrived the next
morning to find the ranch teeming with many species of
butterflies. We were pleased to have a guest, Dennis Olle,
Director - North American Butterfly Association, on hand to aid
in identification. The students spotted several zebra helicons,
due to the abundance of passionflower vines. Sponsors, TLC2,
of the University of Houston and the Aransas National Wildlife
Refuge, aided us in hosting 321 5th
and 6th
graders. We owe many thanks to presenters the Aransas National
Wildlife Refuge, the Texas State Aquarium, Texas Parks &
Wildlife, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and volunteers from the
community.
Nan
and Lyndon, our intrepid naturalists and birding guides, sighted
a Chihuahuan raven on January 9th. This was a very rare
sighting and we got a good look at its wedged tail.
The
custom tours have become so successful that we’ve added a second
Pinzgauer to our fleet. Whether you’re interested in birds,
butterflies, flowers, or just a tour of the ranch, we invite you
to pack a picnic and enjoy a day in the country with us.
